The boutique, located in the former Hôtel de Boullongne built by Jacques V. Gabriel for the financier John Law, has an 18th-century cut-stone façade and is classified as a historic monument. At that time Place Vendôme was, along with Rue de la Paix, the epicentre of Parisian elegance. It attracted couturiers, fashion designers – Paris high society in general.

The great couturier Charles Frederick Worth confirmed the importance of this intersection of jewellery and haute couture by setting up boutique at 7 Rue de la Paix, the northern continuation of Place Vendôme, in 1858. Cartier opened here in 1975. On this square considered a temple to high jewellery, it sparked an upheaval in the world of luxury by opening a Must de Cartier boutique, whose more accessible products, such as leather goods, broke free of the traditional high jewellery industry. It was a bold move that revitalised the area in the image of the celebrations that Cartier held there, particularly in 1980, when a thousand guests from all over the world flocked there for a magical evening.

Cartier entrusted the renovation of the new boutique at 23 Place Vendôme to Laura Gonzalez, an interior designer who symbolises the Parisienne, with a kind of bohemian chic that she has made her trademark in Paris. As a free thinker, she dares to use contrasting materials, by turns raw or refined, elegance with a provocative twist. She is behind the metamorphosis of many mythical Parisian nightlife establishments, having succeeded in asserting her style in numerous restaurants and hotels in the French capital.
Today, Laura Gonzalez capitalises on the challenges posed by the historical building, the softness of its lines and its windows, in
an arched circle framed by carved oak woodwork. She has accentuated these curves through the use of half-moon sofas and contoured counters or mirrors. She has created a world of light woods, warm and radiant tones that evoke, in an understated way, the very Parisian illustrations of Kees Van Dongen, Jean Cocteau and Christian Bérard, a whimsical decorator of the 1930s.

Turning a boutique into a place for passing on knowledge and simultaneously contributing to the preservation of traditional craftsmanship: Cartier entrusts renowned artisans with the production of specially commissioned works.
A lacquered wooden panel featuring a motif from a Shanghai Art Deco vanity; a bas-relief work inspired by a 1943 parrot brooch for the Madrid boutique; a panther in Monaco, Lisbon, Seoul, Moscow, New York… The motifs were inspired by archived designs or contemporary creations, all emblematic of Cartier’s style and history.

Engraved glass panel by Bernard Pictet On the first floor, in collaboration with Laura Gonzalez, Cartier commissioned Bernard Pictet to produce an engraved glass panel. Inspired by a high jewellery bracelet from 2014 that was purchased in the boutique, the work was made from extra- white laminated glass, engraved using a chisel and saw. The motifs are set against a green gold leaf background and embellished with worn black and Japanese Midori-green leaves.
Bas-relief in plaster by Etienne Rayssac The first floor is also decorated with a bas-relief by the sculptor and Maître d’Art Etienne Rayssac. Made of plaster, it portrays two panthers in a dreamlike setting that recalls some of Paris’s most famous landmarks.
Straw marquetry panel by François Mascarello This piece is inspired by the Baguette ring, an iconic model in Cartier jewellery. Entirely handmade in the studios of François Mascarello, this straw marquetry panel that gleams with a multitude of hues and tones required 250 hours of work to produce. The straw was carefully selected for its sheen in order to recreate the shimmer of diamonds.
Cartier is fully owned by Swiss based luxury group Richemont.
