If not postponed or cancelled, FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar will be facing a shortage of accommodation locally. Oman and Saudi Arabia are most likely to be the ”back up” destinations which will be receiving the over-flow of football fans.
The war in Ukraine, the growing cases of Covid-19 and the spreading Monkeypox may result in the postponement of the FIFA World Cup. Already, 8 national football federations are considering a joint request to postpone FIFA. On Tuesday, Qatar said ‘it cannot ”abandon” Russia which can be interpreted in many ways.
So far, Qatar has not expressed a clear position on the war in Ukraine. Also, Qatar has not stepped in to supply affected E.U. countries with the energy they are now challenged with. It has only signed a deal with Germany and made a commitment to pour 10 billion euros into the UK for the next years.
Dubai will not be the primary choice when it comes to influx of football fans who would attend the FIFA World Cup. To enter Qatar, football fans will have to show proof of advance purchase of a bundle package that includes tickets to the games, accommodation and return flights.
