Ever since its opening in 1932, The Excelsior Gallia has established itself as one of Milan’s finest luxury addresses within an elegant Belle Epoque building. Acquired by Qatar’s Katara Hospitality the hotel has undergone a most comprehensive renovation and transformation process with a staggering price tag of 400 million euros.
The interior design which is signed by Studio Marco Piva blends chic contemporary style, predominantly minimalist, with futuristic elements, using the finest materials. There is also a sleek contrast, which is widely present throughout the entire hotel, between marble, chrome, aluminum, steel and granite. The architects resorted to luxury home decor powerhouses Poltrona Frau, Flos, Fendi Casa, and Cassina to create unique pieces that show off the very best of Italian design.
One of the highlights of the interior design is lighting, with a giant 30-meter tall Murano-glass installation chandelier hanging in the beautifully restored Art Deco staircase of the hotel. Dramatic lighting features adorn the lobby but also the hallways. A futuristic underwater chromotherapy in a geometric shape is the focus of the indoor heated swimming pool (15m) of the hotel.
Katara’s choice of Starwood Hotels to manage the property under the Luxury Collection brand has proven to be a strategic one, the hotel boasting a high standard of customer service, attentive and personalized. I was most impressed by the Front Office, the F&B staff as well as housekeeping. The quality of the Spa treatments was flawless, complementing the state-of-the-art facilities.
The 7th floor now includes a glamorous evening lounge and a restaurant with the indoor space for dinners and with a generous outdoor terrace space, mostly used for lunch. The views are exquisite! I had a very good business lunch and a lavish dinner, the restaurant boasting a predominantly Italian cuisine menu. Breakfast in the main restaurant on the ground-floor was a true feast! Throughout the entire hotel the quality of the food and the presentation were of the highest luxury standard.
With the renovation, the Excelsior Gallia has added a 1,000 sqm Spa on two floors, which has become the largest in Milan. It is also the first Shiseido branded Spa in Italy with a extensive range of skincare treatments. There is also a Technogym fully equipped fitness centre.
As for the rooms, close attention has been paid to functionality and comfort with the latest technology features such as centralized room controls, high-speed wi-fi (complimentary) and entertainment. Marble bathrooms with separate shower (rain shower) and bathtub complemented by Trussardi bespoke toiletries add to the comfort of the rooms. Bedding boasts incredible comfort with custom mattresses and the finest Italian linen.
