Regardless of the location, i.e. a city with relatively small number of reported Coronavirus cases, specialised physicians and doctors warn that one infected person can spread the virus to others, being known that the virus spreads very fast. One would imagine that a hotel chain the calibre of Four Seasons Hotels would have an expert crisis management team which would monitor all hotels on a daily basis. The last press release is actually a very brief statement which Four Seasons issued on March 18th, 3 days ago.
Over half of Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts remain fully operational, 30% of which are located in countries with over at least 10 confirmed places. With the hotel fully or partially operational, it takes one infected guest who can fast spread the virus to hotel staff but also through dining outlets, especially bar but also Spas and pools where a minimal distance between guests is impossible to impose. The most exposed are House-keeping staff who can touch surfaces in the room of the infected guest, including personal items.
WHY RISK LIVES AND WHY NOT FULLY SHUT DOWN, TEMPORARILY ALL HOTELS?
Many Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts have posted notes on their websites that guests may book rooms, however, dining and wellness facilities are closed, without providing any concrete information on dining. Even if all dining is restricted to in-room dining, a close and direct interaction with hotel staff is also perilous. The same challenges remain for house-keeping but also guests movement through public spaces such as lobbies which cannot be restricted or controlled. Ironically, in the resort of Four Seasons Hampshire, wellness, SPA and pool are closed, yet guests can still book rooms.
Among the fully-closed Four Seasons Hotels are: Paris, Las Vegas, New York (57th), Sharm El Sheikh, San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle, Dallas
Four Seasons Hotels which remain open but without dining and wellness include: Amman, Istanbul, New York Downtown, Boston, Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Washington, Philadelphia, Austin, St Louis, Prague, Budapest, London Park Lane, London Ten Trinity, Casablanca, Marrakech
Four Seasons Hotels which are fully operational, outrageously ignoring that, although there may be no specific Government restrictions, the Coronavirus is expanding at an astonishing speed (already with confirmed cases, but still with relatively small statistics due to the limited testing). These are countries with poor health systems – Cairo (two properties), Tunis, Mexico City.
As New York still leads the number of confirmed cases and number of deaths, Four Seasons Hotels shut down only one of its two hotels in New York, the one at 57 / 56th St. while Four Seasons Hotel New York Downtown, a 15 minute taxi ride from the other property, remains open. Most shocking is that Four Seasons Downtown has chosen its very own ‘tailor-made’ operations besides accommodations maintaining dining partially open
But probably the most shocking is that the two Four Seasons Hotels in Italy (Milan, Florence) remain open, only with restriction on dining and wellness.
