Parisian luxury department store group Galeries Lafayette has commissioned Rem Koolhaas of OMA to recreate a “tower” of glass and steel, with mobile platforms, embedded in a five-storey building in the rue du Plâtre 9, in the Marais district, within short distance from the Centre Pompidou. The project is conducted in collaboration with Citynove, the real estate arm of Groupe Galeries Lafayette.
The project is developed on an existing late nineteenth century building, designed by Samuel de Menjot Dammartin, the facade of which will not change. Covering an area of 2,500 square meters, the space which will be used to produce and exhibit art in its most current forms, encompassing plastic arts, fashion, design and performing arts. The aim of the Foundation is to support contemporary artists and creativity in general.
Works are scheduled to begin this Summer and The Galeries Lafayette Foundation is expected to open in Autumn 2016.
