Recreating a Jazz Age-era nightclub in lower Manhattan, Ralph Lauren opened Ralph’s Club for one night in a former bank on Wall Street, and the stage was taken over by the immensely talented Janelle Monáe.
Media described Monáe’s performance as “fierce and funky,” revealing that the singer “clambered up onto tables, splashed champagne over the cheering audience and even crawled, Josephine Baker style along the floor and back up onto the stage.” Instagram clips captured the energy exuded by the actress and singer, and showcased the stunning tuxedo dress she wore for the performance.
Monáe covered “Fly Me to the Moon,” made famous by Frank Sinatra, which was perfectly apt for the occasion. Monáe also perfectly illustrated the era as she arrived at Ralph’s Club wearing a glittering gown, which she accessorised with a pearl choker. Bella and Gigi Hadid both hit the runway in Ralph Lauren’s vintage-inspired designs, much to the delight of the audience.
Janelle Monáe said to Ralph Lauren during her performance “I think you really, truly are the most amazing American designer we have,”. She then electrified the crowd, standing on a chair, flinging potato chips and wine in the air, crawling along the floor, and tossing up a shoe – all while belting out a song
Cate Blanchett took a break from filming FX’s Mrs America in Toronto to come see the show. “I adore Janelle,” she said as the night began to come to a close. “I think she’s a unique and remarkable performer. There’s no one like her.”
Ralph’s Club continues Lauren’s penchant of late for immersing his fashion week crowds rather than marching models down a runway. In the past, he has enticed his guests to his rural home north of the city for a jaunt in his garage. Ralph’s Club follows Ralph’s Cafe.
“It just was the right time,” Lauren told the AP after the show as the evening wound down. “We’re celebrating. There are a lot of things in the world that are not so wonderful. Every once in awhile, it’s nice to dance.”
