Stepping into the lobby of an Oberoi hotel is like entering the grand home of a favourite relative, a refuge from the cares of the world beyond its doors. The group’s 35 hotels are imbued with character and soul, guests can expect to be treated with grace and courtesy, and design is never put ahead of function. It’s a winning formula that has seen Oberoi voted World’s Best Hotel Group 2018 by readers of Telegraph Travel for the second year running.
“If you don’t look at the small things, you’ll miss the big things”, is the mantra instilled in staff by Biki Oberoi, the meticulous executive chairman, who, at 89, still keeps a close eye on standards.
Another of Oberoi’s strengths is that it never rests on its laurels. The Oberoi New Delhi re-opened earlier this year after an 18-month renovation to create a masterpiece of modern hotel design, adding a glamorous spa, rooftop bar, and restaurants headed by Michelin-starred chefs.
Oberoi’s portfolio spans the sub-continent from Wildflower Hall in Shimla, the former home of Lord Kitchener, to the luxurious Vrinda motor launch on Kerala’s backwaters. It also has properties in Mauritius, Indonesia, Morocco and the Gulf.
Taj Hotels, another Indian-based hotel group, took second place this year (up from third in 2017). The group, with hotels ranging from city to safari, unveiled its first hotel in the Andamans, Taj Exotica Resort and Spa, earlier this year. Relais & Chateaux, a global collection of hotels for food lovers, took third place.
