Sofitel London St James will host “Vegetables”, the latest exhibition by French artist, Patrick Laroche, which will be held on 18 September – 31 October 2014, coinciding with the British harvest season and illustrating Sofitel’s passion for both culture and gastronomy.
As a fitting accompaniment, the hotel’s signature restaurant, The Balcon will offer new vibrant, vegetable dishes created by Head Chef, Vincent Ménager, combining fresh UK produce with French recipes.
Highlights of the menu include a delicate savoury madeleine, a delectable red pepper and tomato Octopus Basquaise and a surprisingly light parsnip and maple syrup cake. Sofitel London St James has also created the ‘Laroche Cocktail’: Inspired by the juxtaposition of
Laroche’s work, The Balcon has fashioned a fresh cocktail with rosemary and basil ice cubes, cucumber, flavoursome Heirloom tomatoes and finished with a signature mushroom syrup, adding a very ‘umami’ dimension to enliven the palate.
Laroche first started sculpting aged just 15, and since then he has been distinguished by the coveted accolade of ‘Meilleur ouvrier de France’. Laroche is well renowned for his extravagant sculptures, which enlarge or reduce the natural form of objects. His interest in the vegetable form stems from the unique shapes and contours that are reflected in his work. Laroche distorts vegetables from their natural state, choosing to paint peppers blue and artichokes pink, stretching the art to its limit in terms of shape and size.
