Tesla‘s S Sedan is the best selling car of any sort in eight of the top 25 wealthiest zip codes in the U.S. for the first eight months of the year, and every one of the zip codes is in California, according to a study by car researching outfit Edmunds.com. Edmunds used its own data, as well as R.L. Polk & Co. registration data and a study by Forbes of the wealthiest zip codes by real estate values.
The electric Tesla S accounted for 15.4% of all new cars registered to people living in Atherton, Calif., where the median home price is $6.67 million. Tesla’s total sales through two quarters in the U.S. are around 10,000 — in a market that sold more than 7 million cars over that span.
The seven other zip codes that have a high number of Model S registrations are also in California, with Los Altos Hills being second with 11.9% of new registrations. According to the Edmunds report, California buyers bought more Tesla’s due to the fact they receive several incentives – a federal tax credit of $7,500, plus are eligible for a $2,500 state tax credit and access to the high-occupancy vehicle lane — even with just the driver in the car.
Internationally, Tesla is gaining ground in markets such as Norway – Tesla Model S sells 616 units to become Norway’s best-selling new vehicle in September.
