Chewable tobacco is made from cured tobacco leaves. Adding flavorings with licorice and various other substances gives it a sweet taste. It is in the form of loose tobacco leaves, pellets or “bits” (leaf tobacco rolled into small shells), plugs (leaf tobacco pressed and held together with some sweetener), or twists (leaf tobacco rolled into rope-like strands and twisted). The tobacco is placed in the mouth, usually between the cheek and lower lip or at the jaw side, and can be chewed. Chewing tobacco contains nicotine and other chemical substances. High-Intensity Sweeteners in Alternative Tobacco Products
Sweeteners in tobacco products may influence use initiation and reinforcement, with unique appeal to young users. Recent analysis and studies of smokeless tobacco products (snuff, snus, dissolvable) detected flavorings identical to those added to confectionary products such as sweet candy and chewing gum. Sweeteners are added in smokeless tobacco products, a dissolvable product, electronic cigarette liquids, and chewable tobacco. The flavorings, burn, nicotine, and textures are added to satisfy consumers.
Types of Smokeless Tobacco
Chewing tobacco is consumed all around the globe. Smokeless tobacco products consist of tobacco or a tobacco blend that’s chewed, sucked on or sniffed, rather than smoked. The soft tissues of the mouth absorb nicotine, and, in some cases, the liquified tobacco can be swallowed.
Various smokeless tobacco products in the market. In the US, the main types of smokeless tobacco include the following:
Chewing tobacco is packaged in the form of loose tobacco leaves. The tobacco leaves are rolled into a small, rectangular shape called a plug.
- Snuff: It is fair to cut or ground tobacco that may be flavored. It’s readily available in dry or moist forms and is packed in tins or small pouches. Snuff is placed between the gums, and dry snuff can be sniffed into the nose. Using snuff is also called dipping.
- Snus: Snus is a smokeless, spitless, flavored tobacco product that originated in Sweden. It’s comparable to snuff but is pasteurized to eliminate the effect of bacteria that might produce cancer-causing chemicals. Users and research suggest that this is less harmful and cancer-causing as compared to regular cigarettes.
- Dissolvable tobacco is a powdered form of tobacco that is usually flavored. Dissolvable tobacco liquefies in the mouth, and no spitting of tobacco juice is required. They are orbs or lozenges. Strips are thin and flat sheets and resemble a dissolvable breath strip.
- CBD: CBD is used to calm anxiety, pain relief, and inflammation. It helps to reduce the frequency and intensity of seizures. CBD for dogs is used to help dogs sleep tight at night.
High Cigarette Taxes and the Use of Chewing Tobacco
It is observed that chewing tobacco taxes had no effect on smokeless tobacco use and cigar taxes had no impact on cigar use. In contrast, a drastic 10% increase in cigarette taxes was associated with a 1.0 percentage point increase in smokeless tobacco, mostly among adolescent males. A 10% increase in cigarette taxes was also associated with a 1.5 percentage point increase in cigar use among adolescent males and a 0.7 percentage point increase in cigar use among young females.
