Digital nomadism has often been associated with low-budget travel. However, this narrative is losing credibility as more people are making their fortune online and therefore are not grounded in one physical location.
But what is digital nomadism?
This is the lifestyle that becomes possible when you can work remotely full-time. It can be that you are a freelancer who gets gigs over the internet and gets paid to do them. It can also be that you have an e-commerce site and sell products. Indeed, the list of enterprises people are doing online and making money is growing.
Many companies and organizations have allowed their staff to work away from a physical office in recent years. This will likely be a growing trend going into the future. That means it is more than just freelancers and online entrepreneurs who can afford to be digital nomads. Professionals and employees in organizations could also easily join the bandwagon.
The potential of digital nomadism in luxury travel
Indeed, digital nomadism has the potential to be the best type of luxury travel lifestyle. That is because instead of first accumulating the money one needs to fund the lifestyle, one can generate it as one goes.
Meanwhile, it makes a luxury travel lifestyle possible even for young people who have not inherited a fortune. They do not have to sacrifice 30 to 40 years of their lives to a physical location before they can afford to enjoy the finer things of life while on the move.
Digital nomadism will change the luxury travel lifestyle in other ways too. For example, traditional luxury travelers have been planning their visits at particular times of the year. With the ability to work while in transit, many can do it throughout the year.
It is also the case that with luxury that is done at a particular time of the year, the travelers have a stable social life in their homes and therefore do not need to create or be part of another community.
The hospitality industry adapting.
That changes when one has no time or opportunity to develop social relationships. That means luxury travelers who are digital nomads will prefer staying where they are likely to mingle and network with other digital nomads. That means the hospitality industry has to readjust to accommodate the needs of this emerging category of travelers.
That also may result in luxury co-living spaces emerging in cities popular with luxury travelers around the world.
The merging of digital nomadism and luxury travel is in its early stages. No one can for sure predict how it will evolve with time. Nevertheless, it is a phenomenon that will become part of the travel landscape.
In the long term, digital nomadism will likely increase the number of luxury travelers worldwide throughout the year. Indeed, digital nomadism could be the primary and most accepted way of doing luxury travel.
