With bold new strategic appointments such as as new CEO, Barbara Mucker (ex Silver Sea Cruises), a new Chief Brand Officer, Barbara Biffi (ex MSC Cruises) and Chief Operating and Asset Management Officer, Paul Lornegan – KEMPINSKI has been making bold moves to reassert its undeniable understanding of luxury hospitality which has been slightly dormant from a branding point of view in the past years.
In the luxury hospitality industry, KEMPINSKI has already commanded great respect as a resource of exceptional luxury hospitality talent for the entire industry. KEMPINSKI has been a ‘pépinière’ of General Manager over the past decades, many leaders at other established luxury hotel groups or chains having founded their careers at KEMPINSKI.
Recent turbulent years especially at the key strategic executive team have resulted in the loss of some properties of which Emirates Palace (Abu Dhabi) Emerald Palace (Dubai), Palais Hansen (Vienna), Kempinski Hamburg, San Clemente Palace (Venice), among the most notable. But it has gained other properties in the Middle East but also in Europe where it now operates the splendid ultra-luxury Royal Residence Nymphenburg (outside Munich)
With the recent renovations of Ciragan Palace in Istanbul, Kempinski Munich and Kempinski Budapest, has once again show why KEMPINSKI cannot be overlooked or discarded from any global luxury hospitality rankings and ratings. The product at these flagship properties is without any doubt superior to other brands such as Fairmont, Sofitel, Grand Hyatt, Luxury Collection or Radisson Collection.
I have recently experienced the newly renovated KEMPINSKI Corvinus Budapest, one of the finest luxury hotels in Central & Eastern Europe. Opened in 1992, the property has consistently maintained its reputation with impeccable service standards and an enviably low staff turnover. The property now boasts twice as many suites. All rooms and suites have been renovated and redesigned at world class luxury standards.
I was particularly impressed by the exquisite interior design which is a subtle blend of classic and contemporary, with a superlative bedding and flawless sleep experience – finest high thread linens and one-of-a-kind mattresses. The quality of furnishings and finishes is outstanding, with an incredible attention to details – lighting. technology, soundproofing, touch high-water pressure shower and luxury Ferragamo bespoke amenities.
Despite an inventory of 300 keys, all my expectations were exceeded by the standards of personalisation and individualisation. I have been recognised by my name by most of the team at every encounter, at all departments. There is a unique sense of warmth but also of ‘being in good hands” – feeling ”safe” but also pampered. Mention must also be made that the approach by the team has been effortless, efficient and reliable.
One other aspect I must mention is the impeccable housekeeping service – performed as an art! Room feels crisp and fresh at every given time of the day and turndown happens as part of the brand DNA – it is not ”by demand” as it happens to be at most other luxury hotel groups and chains who cite staffing shortages and post pandemic hardships.
Similarly to other KEMPINSKI properties, KEMPINSKI CORVINUS has built and maintained a strong bond with the city – the property has always been regarded with great respect and admiration by locals who have always appreciated reliability and predictability. From the culinary to the design of some signature suites but also artworks throughout the hotel – they are all proudly Hungarian!
Luxury at KEMPINSKI has always been about humility and humbleness. KEMPINSKI has never claimed or even attempted to ”redefine” luxury. KEMPINSKI should be bold and confident about its positioning which is classic luxury. KEMPINSKI should be discreet but also edgy, without necessarily taking itself too seriously. Brand communications should be simplified and more classic.
I do hope to have the chance to review and experience some of the other KEMPINSKI flagships such as the ADLON, The Ciragan Palace and the Grand Hotel Des Bains.
