Hotel Okura will expand into the Russian market in 2022, leveraging the appeal of Japanese-style hospitality with an eye toward operating five properties there within three years.
Major Russian real estate company Aeon will develop the roughly 300-room hotel near Sheremetyevo International Airport, which serves Moscow, while Hotel Okura will operate the property. Total development costs are estimated at 6 billion yen ($55.3 million). The basic agreement, signed on Saturday, comes as part of economic exchanges between the two countries led by the Japanese government.
With around 30,000 sq. meters of floor space, the hotel will feature a Japanese restaurant, large meeting rooms and a spa with hot baths in the style of Japan’s onsen hot springs.
Hotel Okura will dispatch customer service instructors from Japan. Considering that there are few Japanese hotels in Russia, the company anticipates strong demand for a high-end hotel that offers Japanese-style hospitality.
The Japanese company hopes to operate about five hotels in Russia by 2025. The group operates 87 hotels in 16 countries and regions. The bilateral economic exchanges are related to efforts by Japan and Russia to conclude a formal peace treaty for World War II.
