Bode has recently opened a standalone boutique in Tokyo. The cult fashion brand, led by designer Emily Bode, has opted for a location away from the downtrodden retail paths, picking a location Yoyogi-Uehara, a leafy residential area wedged in between the bustling shopping zones of Shinjuku and Shibuya. Here, the New York City-based fashion house has secured a 200 sqm. (2,150 sq.ft.) unit on the ground floor of an eight-storey, early 1980s apartment building.
The interior design of Bode‘s new outpost sees a renewed collaboration with Green River Project, a design practice co-founded by Bode’s husband Aaron Singh Aujla, and is inspired by the work of Czech-American architect Antonin Raymond, who even built several notable buildings in the Japanese capital. The Bode store comprising different rooms and nooks, the premises are furnished with specific pieces designed by the aforementioned practice, paired with a wide range of meticulously sourced objects and artworks.
The latter range includes a 1920s ceramic vase, a painting that once hung in the Oval Office of the White House by artist Matt Kenny, and a pyramid painting by artist Kurt Beers. A seemingly inserted timber tool shed with a front porch presents the brand’s footwear collection. The new Bode store carries the full men’s and women’s collections, in addition to limited edition apparel items, cushions made from mid-century national park-patterned pillowcases, and souvenir items.
