In the Past
The history of actual painting goes back to the very earliest cave paintings that humans made. Throughout the entire Renaissance, the art of painting was mainly used to produce religious iconography and reality, or even to commemorate critical events. Photography didn’t arrive until the mid-19th century. Because the camera was able to reproduce reality, most painters turned to depicting emotions and the abstract as opposed to changing their art. Aesthetics
Both photography and painting exist in a variety of aesthetic forms. In painting, there’s a style called illusionist that’s where reality is replicated and made to look as if it were a photograph, and for example, if I wanted someone to paint my photo, this is the style of painter I would look for. At the same time, expressionist painting takes liberties with actual reality and uses the imagination of the artist for the material source. When it comes to photography, photojournalism is realistic and objective while experimental photography has to do with the abstract that comes from the manipulation of the film or camera in order to produce a style that’s expressionistic.
Technique
The techniques used to create paintings or photos are also different. Both require the artist to have an understanding of the basic principles of color and composition, but painting also requires control of the paint and brush along with hand-eye coordination. Photographers need to know how to use a variety of filters and lenses to achieve the desired effects. They also need to know how to work in darkrooms or how to utilize digital imaging software to manipulate the images after the pictures have been taken. It’s also important to know that paintings can be made from photos and photos can be taken of paintings.
Digital Alternative
Both photography and painting have undergone changes with the advancement of tech and the birth of digital alternatives. The power of photography is enhanced by digital advancements by the way that photographers capture, store, and then manipulate the images. Simultaneously, digital painting, which can involve changing hand painted images after they have been scanned into computers, or working in environments that are completely virtual and then making images from scratch using painting programs, allows painters to have their very own high-tech tools with which they can pursue their art
Yes, painting has been around for longer, but in today’s society, digital images are more in demand. That being said, there are quite a few people who enjoy the look of an actual painting and who still employ artists to either paint their portraits from sittings or by using an actual photograph to go by. Either way, both forms of art are in high demand and should remain so for many years to come.
