Located in the attractive Oosterpark (10 mins from downtown) and housed in a historic university building built in 1908,Maurits at the Park is the sixth and newest property from Pillows Hotels, the hospitality brand with luxury hotels and restaurants in the Netherlands and Belgium.

With 88 luxurious rooms and suites, a fine dining restaurant, a brasserie, two bars, and a private lounge area, the hotel just launched a month ago and is already attracting plenty of overseas and local visitors. Situated on the edge of the Oosterpark, the hotel was designed by award-winning architectural firm Office Winhov, with interiors by Studio Linse.

The architects won an award for their work at Pillows Hotel Ter Borch Zwolle while Paul Linse of Studio Linse is well known for his creations at the Rijks museum, Royal Opera House, London and Pillows Hotel Zwolle. Paul Linse says a “noble simplicity” runs throughout the hotel, connecting the carefully chosen interior elements. Soft, tactile materials and a warm, earthy color palette create a calm atmosphere.

The guest rooms and suites combine French chic with Dutch modernism. Understated and inviting, every room features thick, cosy carpets and super comfortable, king-size beds made with high thread count Egyptian cotton linens. An elegant extra feature is the striking individual artworks by Dutch painter Raphaël Hermans in every room. Artwork throughout the hotel has also been carefully chosen, including a Picasso print in the bar.

A nice touch is the common area, The Living, an airy private lounge accessible only to staying guests, with an impressive library and coffee and drinks on offer. A well-equipped gym is open 24/7 and downstairs there’s a sauna and spa offering treatments

VanOost is a fine dining restaurant with fifteen-meter-high ceilings and design elements that were inspired by the world culture Tropenmuseum next door. Headed by chef Floris van Straalen, the menu features dishes from all over the world, prepared in view of diners in a slick open kitchen.

Spring Cafe Brasserie is in a lovely setting overlooking the park, ideal for a leisurely weekend brunch or more casual dinner. Chef Luigi di Benedetto’s menu combines Italian and French cuisine and his desserts are divine. Try the Tarte tatin with vanilla ice cream or the Blackout cake and raspberry sorbet.

Fitz’s Bar is an intimate space for cocktails, with red leather, wood, felt and velour design details. This 1920s inspired bar is led by manager Nick Vrielink, who recently qualified as Dutch champion for the IBA World Cocktail Championship in Rome. In warmer months a rooftop bar offers stunning views of the park and the city, the ultimate setting for summer drinks
